How to care for

Indoor Bonsai Trees

By following the tips below, you can ensure that your bonsai tree gets the love it needs to stay healthy and thrive.

Basic rules for

Placement

Find the right location: Indoor bonsai should be placed in a location with bright, indirect light. Avoid placing the tree in direct sunlight, as this can cause the leaves to scorch.

Basic rules for

Watering

To water an indoor bonsai tree, check the soil moisture level regularly and water the tree thoroughly when the soil is dry, using room temperature water. Water the tree every few days to once a week, adjusting for the type of tree, pot size, and room conditions.

Basic rules for

Fertilizing

Use a balanced fertilizer specifically formulated for bonsai plants. Follow the recommended dosage and frequency for your specific type of bonsai, and water the plant thoroughly before and after fertilizing to help the nutrients reach the roots.

Care Questions

Read the most frequently asked questions on bonsai care below.

The frequency of watering will depend on the species of tree, the size and type of pot, the time of year, and the climate in which the bonsai is kept. In general, bonsai trees should be watered when the soil begins to dry out, but not allowed to dry out completely.

Bonsai trees need plenty of indirect sunlight to thrive. If your bonsai tree is not getting enough light, it may have pale leaves, or the leaves may yellow and fall off. You can move the tree to a sunnier location or use grow lights to supplement the natural light.

Bonsai trees should be fertilized during the growing season, usually from spring to fall. It is best to use a balanced fertilizer with equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer package for the correct amount to use.

Trimming and shaping your bonsai tree involves removing excess growth and training the branches and leaves into the desired shape. It is important to use sharp, clean scissors or shears when trimming, and to only remove small amounts of growth at a time.

Repotting your bonsai tree involves removing it from its current pot and replanting it in fresh soil. This should be done every two to three years, or when the roots have outgrown the pot. Be sure to use a well-draining soil mix and a pot that is appropriately sized for the tree.
