The Story of Shirin-Yoku
“It was an honor visiting Meiji Jingū. Meiji Jingū, a shrine in Tokyo, is not very old by Japanese standards. As a tribute to Emperor Meiji and Empress Sh*ken, it was completed in 1920. It is believed that trees provide a conduit between shrines and the gods. A shrine forest, or chinju no mori, is typically thought of as "old primeval forest," bringing us back to "the ancient age of myth." However, at Meiji Jing*, everything was planted from scratch, which required the planting of more than a hundred thousand trees. It was intended to create an eternal forest dominated by long-lived trees such as zelkova or ginkgo, but because an immediate shrine atmosphere was needed, a 150-year plan was designed in which fast-growing trees such as Hinoki cypress, Japanese cryptomeria, and two kinds of pine provided the appearance of a chinju no mori before small, broadleaf species gradually took over.”
